I personally think that there is a natural "out of sight, out of mind" aspect to the whole backup thing. So easy to look past during the rigors of the day. I can't imagine the sheer volume of backup data out there in the aggregate that IT folks really don't know how to access, or the volume of data that isn't there that people assume is:)
