I've always been an advocate of standardization on all fronts. Not only in the form of 'standard configurations' but also 'configuration standards'. One might be 'we use these commands, in this order, in this format', while the other may mean 'we do things this way, and this is why'. And don't just say you have them - document them. Write them down. That way, when it comes up in conversation, you can open the document and point 'see - it says so right here'. That goes a long way.
It doesn't add unnecessary complexity, I think that change control and management is key in any enterprise environment. This is one of those areas that makes the difference between operating as an enterprise IT shop and just 'winging it'.
