Label, Label, Label the cables in a uniform manner on both ends before running the cable then "ring out" the cable once prior to connecting it to any equipment.  Document, Document, Document your configs in a uniform manner on all equipment.  Make sure someone who is new would be able to understand the meaning of the labels and/or the config description.  Use the OSI layers for troubleshooting - cables don't usually just "go bad", but it's always a place to check to ensure connections are tight and as long as the labels are meaningful, the tech can verifiy the cable in the right place.  As odd as it might seem to some, accurate, uniform documentation / "paperwork" is paramount (in my opinion). hulattp I agree!
