Tips to use more secure protocols for SNMP and configuration backup?

We're using Orion NPM, NTM, NCM and UDT.

have used basic Telnet and SNMP V2 for configuration management and device monitoring (switches mostly). Now, as part of other bigger changes, we're planning to start using more secure ways to do those things. So plan is to backup switch configurations with SSH and monitor with SNMP v3. But I have no idea how to do that. No idea what I must do to switch configurations (mostly Cisco 2950 and 2960 switches, and few Cisco 3500 and HP 8000 models) to enable those protocols. Any Cisco links where basic things are told? And same for SNMP settings?

I tried to enable those options "just like that" because "it can't be so hard". Only thing I got was that I wasn't anymore able to login to switch...

I know this is not Orion issue really, but I assume there is people who're using SSH and SNMPv3 in Cisco-based LAN...
